Chapter 28
Chapter 28
The night had been perfect. The moment was perfect, a culmination of their journey together. But as they began to leave the dance floor, Julian's triumph was abruptly interrupted.
"Julian," a voice called, sharp and familiar. He turned to see Lady Aurelia approaching, her expression unreadable.
"Lady Aurelia," Julian greeted her, his voice polite but wary.
"May I have a word with you in private?" she asked, her tone leaving no room for refusal.
Julian felt his mood sour. He glanced at Cordelia, who gave him a supportive nod. "Of course," he replied, following Lady Aurelia to a quieter corner of the room.
As they walked, Julian's sense of triumph faded, replaced by a feeling of dread.
He had overcome so much to be here tonight, and now, with Lady Aurelia's unexpected request, he feared what she might have to say.
Once they were secluded, Lady Aurelia turned to him with a coy smile.
"Julian, you looked quite the hero out there on the dance floor," she said, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "It is refreshing to see you moving so gracefully."
Julian's jaw tightened. "Thank you, Lady Aurelia," he replied curtly, wanting to end the conversation as quickly as possible.
She stepped closer, her eyes narrowing. "But tell me, do you truly believe you and Cordelia are a suitable match? You both looked rather ... mismatched out there. Almost comical, really."
Julian felt growing anger. "I fail to see how our dance concerns you, Lady Aurelia," he said, his voice cold.
Lady Aurelia chuckled, the sound grating on his nerves. "Oh, Julian, do not be so serious. I merely meant that Cordelia is such a delicate flower, and you ... well, you seem more like a bear fumbling through a garden."
His hands clenched into fists at his sides. "You have no right to speak about Cordelia or our relationship in such a manner," he said, barely containing his fury.
Lady Aurelia's smile widened, sensing his anger. "Oh, come now, Julian. I am merely offering my observations. Surely you can handle a little jesting?"
"This is not jesting," Julian snapped, his patience wearing thin. "It is cruelty, and I will not stand for it."
Lady Aurelia's eyes gleamed with a predatory light, her smile unfaltering. She stepped even closer, invading Julian's personal space, her breath warm against his cheek.
"Very well, Julian," she purred, "let us not speak of Cordelia or your dance. Let us speak of other matters that concern only you and me."
Julian's stomach churned with anger and disgust. "What are you implying, Lady Aurelia?" he asked, his voice cold and measured.
Her hand reached out, lightly brushing the lapel of his jacket. "Oh, Julian, must I spell it out for you?" she said, her voice a silky whisper. "You know there has always been a certain ... tension between us. A spark."
Julian took a step back, putting distance between them. "You are mistaken," he said firmly. "There is no spark, no tension. I love Cordelia, and nothing you say or do will change that."
Aurelia's eyes narrowed, her expression hardening. "Do you truly believe that, Julian? Do you think a woman like Cordelia can truly satisfy a man like you?" Her voice was low and mocking. "She is delicate, fragile. You need someone who can match your passion and intensity."
Julian's anger flared, his fists clenching at his sides. "Enough," he said, his voice a growl. "I will not stand here and listen to you disparage Cordelia. She is everything to me, and I will not let you or anyone else come between us."
Lady Aurelia's eyes flashed with irritation, but she quickly masked it with a smile. "You speak with such certainty, Julian," she said, her voice dripping with condescension. "But have you forgotten the time when you thought differently? When you and I were inseparable, making grand plans for our future together?"
Julian's jaw tightened, memories of a different time surfacing reluctantly. "That was a long time ago, Aurelia," he said, his voice firm. "Things have changed."
"Oh, indeed they have," she replied, her smile turning cruel. "Do you remember how you used to look at me? How you used to speak of our future? We had dreams, Julian. Dreams that you seem to have discarded."
Julian took a deep breath, his anger barely contained. "I remember," he said quietly. "I remember how quickly those dreams vanished the moment I was injured. How you disappeared the moment I got the scar on my face."
Lady Aurelia's expression faltered momentarily, but she quickly regained her composure. "That was a difficult time for both of us," she said dismissively. "You were not the same man after your injury."
"No," Julian agreed, his voice hard. "I was not. But I expected you to stand by me, to support me. Instead, you showed your true character and abandoned me when I needed you most."
Aurelia's eyes blazed with anger. "I had my reasons, Julian," she snapped. "You were wallowing in self-pity, pushing everyone away."
Julian shook his head, his anger giving way to a cold clarity. "No, Aurelia. I was struggling, and you chose to leave. That speaks volumes about who you are. And it makes me even more certain that Cordelia is the woman I am meant to be with. She stood by me when things were difficult. She loved me despite my flaws."
Lady Aurelia's face twisted with jealousy and spite. "You are a fool, Julian," she hissed. "Cordelia will never be able to give you what I could have."
Julian met Lady Aurelia's gaze with unwavering resolve. "I have everything I need with Cordelia," he said firmly. "And I have no interest in what you could offer, Aurelia."
For a moment, silence hung between them, thick with tension. Then, to Julian's surprise, Lady Aurelia's demeanour shifted. The hard edge in her eyes softened, and she looked away, a hint of vulnerability breaking through her mask of pride.
"Julian," she began, her voice quieter, almost pleading, "I did not come here tonight just to dredge up the past or to criticize your choices." She hesitated, her gaze flickering back to his face. "There is something I need to tell you. Something important."
Julian raised an eyebrow, wary but curious. "Go on."
Lady Aurelia took a deep breath, visibly struggling to maintain her composure.
"My family is in trouble, Julian. Financial trouble. We have lost nearly everything. My father's investments failed, and now we are on the brink of ruin."
Her voice trembled slightly, the desperation clear in her eyes.
"I need a loan. A substantial one to keep us afloat. You were once close to my family. I thought … perhaps you could help."
Julian was taken aback by her admission. He had expected manipulation, more barbed comments, anything but this genuine plea for help. For a moment, he was silent, processing her words.
Then, a realization dawned on him, and his initial surprise gave way to a cold, simmering anger.
"Aurelia," he began, his voice icy, "now I see what this has all been about. All your jabs at Cordelia, your attempts to rekindle something that died long ago. You have been trying to manipulate me, soften me up for this moment."
Aurelia's eyes widened with shock and indignation. "Julian, that is not …"
"No," he interrupted, his voice growing harsher. "Do not lie to me. You tried to ruin this night for me and Cordelia just to get what you want. You came to my home and tried to ruin my marriage also. I see you now for who you really are … a selfish, superficial woman who cares for nothing beyond her own comfort and status."
Her face contorted with anger. "How dare you speak to me like that! You think you are better than me, Julian? Just because you found someone who can tolerate your scars and brooding?"
Julian shook his head, his expression one of disappointment rather than rage. "It is not about being better, Aurelia. It is about having a heart, something you clearly lack. Cordelia loves me for who I am, scars and all. She is genuine, kind, and loyal. Everything you pretend to be but are not."
Aurelia's cheeks flushed with fury, her composure slipping. "You do not understand! My family is suffering! I am doing what I have to do to save them!"
Julian's eyes hardened. "And in doing so, you revealed your true nature. You would trample over anyone and destroy anything just to get what you want. I will not be a part of that. I will not give you a loan, Aurelia. You can find someone else to prey upon."
She stared at him, stunned and seething. "You will regret this, Julian. You will regret turning your back on me."
"No, Aurelia," he replied calmly, "the only thing I regret is ever believing you cared for me. Tonight has shown me just how right I am to have chosen Cordelia. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a perfect night to get back to."
With that, Julian turned on his heel and walked away, leaving Lady Aurelia standing alone, her face a mask of rage and disbelief. As he returned to Cordelia, he felt a weight lift from his shoulders. He had finally confronted the ghost of his past; now, he could fully embrace the future.
Cordelia looked up as he approached, concern apparent in her features. "Julian, what happened?" she asked, her voice filled with worry.
Julian took her hands in his, his expression softening as he looked into her eyes. "Lady Aurelia wanted to discuss something from our past," he began, his voice calm but resolute. "She tried to manipulate me, to drive a wedge between us, but it did not work. She also admitted that her family is in financial trouble and asked me for a loan."
Cordelia's eyes widened in surprise. "A loan? After everything she has done?"
"Yes," Julian nodded. "But I refused. I told her I would not be a part of her schemes. She tried to make me doubt our relationship, to make me believe that you and I are not a good match. But, my love, nothing she said could change how I feel about you."
Cordelia's expression softened, her eyes shining with affection. "Julian, I am so proud of you. I know it must have been difficult to face her."
"It was," Julian admitted. "But it was necessary. I needed to put the past behind me once and for all. And now, I can do that because I have you."
Cordelia smiled, relief and love radiating from her. "And you will always have me."
Julian felt much gratitude and love for the woman standing before him. He had faced the shadows of his past, and now, he was ready to embrace the light of his future with Cordelia by his side.
"Shall we dance once more?" he asked, a playful glint in his eye.
Cordelia's smile widened, and she nodded. "Yes, that sounds wonderful."
Julian led Cordelia back onto the dance floor with renewed purpose and joy. As they moved to the music, the room around them seemed to fade away, leaving only the two united in their love and commitment.
Julian held Cordelia close, feeling her warmth and strength. He knew that no matter what challenges they faced, they would face them together. And as they danced, he felt a profound sense of peace and happiness, knowing that he had found his true partner in life.
The night, which Aurelia's intrusion had momentarily marred, was once again perfect. Julian and Cordelia swayed to the rhythm of the music, their hearts beating in harmony.
As the dance ended, Julian looked into Cordelia's eyes and whispered, "I love you, Cordelia."
"I love you too, Julian," she replied, her voice filled with emotion.
