Chapter 52

Fifty-Two

Rhoswyn

W hen I wake, it’s to the sound of Caed’s hushed voice.

“The redcap came to fetch me. He’s been sent to find out what happened to Elfhame, and my guess is they probably want you in the war room, too.”

There’s a long silence, followed by Bree’s soft sigh and the rustle of clothes being shrugged on.

“I’m trusting you with her, Fomorian. Don’t make me regret it,” Bree murmurs before bending to kiss my forehead. “I’ll be back, dragonfly. Keep my spot warm.”

I sigh, still toasty beneath the furs. Though the soreness has passed, I’m still tired and wrung out. Goddess, is this how my mates felt after my fever?

A door closes somewhere in the room, and I smile as a warm shadow falls over me.

“You awake, little queen?” Caed asks, and I shake my head.

“Nope.”

The bed is warm, and if I leave it, then I’ll have to face the war, Cedwyn’s death, and whatever else inevitably has gone wrong in my absence.

“Okay. Just sleep then.”

“Snuggle me?” I reach a hand out from the furs, shivering when I feel the chill of his blue skin. “Actually, no. You’re too cold.”

Caed’s breath catches, his fingers brushing my hair gently out of my face.

“I’m so, so sorry for this, Rhoswyn.”
