Chapter 17

Ileft Cas and Benji with Hannibal. I was content to do that because I knew it meant Hannibal was away from our mate and Benji would be trolling the fuck out of him. I meant to make my way to the front office to look into patients. Yeah, I was digging into our mate to see if she was the same person we were trying to find, but I was also trying to find schematics on the building to find out where they were keeping the angel tears.

The rest of the nuns and priests were avoiding me. They’d been doing that before I announced I was hiring patients as assistants. They seemed uncomfortable around me because I was blind. I could see their auras in the hallway. They’d wave their hands like they wanted to be sure I was blind and then they’d take off in the other direction.

Assholes.

I had this app on my phone. We had this young vampire in our village. The kid was a genius. There was no borderline about it. He’d already written several apps that made him a millionaire. A lot of them were accessibility related. I had one on my phone from him where I could scan any text and it would read it back to me.

The kid had this massive crush on Cas. He was barely nineteen, which was a fetus in terms of our lifespans. I think we could all admit Cas had a sexy voice. I was not complaining the kid paid Cas to narrate my app.

Cas was supposed to sneak away and leave Benji with Hannibal. I didn’t really do much with the god Hannibal prayed to, but he might want to do that if he was going to be alone with our boyfriend.

I could manage my way around a computer with the narrate feature, too. I sat down and made my way to the patient records while I waited for Cas. I pointed my phone at the screen and let it read to me.

This was…fucking pointless. They didn’t have our names. They didn’t even have us classified right. They didn’t have us by our actual race and then break it down by type. Like, there were shifters, but there were many different types of shifters. Witches and warlocks had powers they shared, but we all had one main power. There were multiple types of demons and there were even more than one type of vampire. I couldn’t even keep up with how many kinds of Fae there were.

These people actually thought demons were fallen angels, and they fell into categories involving the four elements. My Latin was a little rusty, but yeah, those classifications were mostly elements.

Demons and angels weren’t related and elementals were Fae. That wasn’t how any of this worked. Fuck me. I was so fucking pissed when Cas snuck in.

“I’d feel bad for the blue guy, but fuck him. He upset our mate. I talked to her yesterday, and she’s been quiet since,” Cas growled.

Seriously, fuck him. I didn’t like sleeping away from Cas and Benji any more than I liked being away from my mate. This was miserable. I hated being back in one of these facilities, even though I was on the other side of it this time.

“Did you tell Benji?”

“No, I’m telling you. If I tell Benji, he’s going to kill him too soon. She said they have a gas here. I don’t know if it’s the same one we’re worried about.”

“Why do you think I’m going to react to that any better?”

“I don’t. It’s just I’m not either, and I needed to tell someone,” Cas said.

“Ugh. Fuck you.”

“You said we couldn’t.”

I flipped Cas off and stuck my tongue out at him for good measure. I explained to him why the database was useless. There wasn’t some big revelation about a god-touched green witch in the basement either. The Latin word for Earthly demon could have been for a green witch or a variety of shifters.

I could feel waves of intensity coming off of Cas and it was setting me on edge.

“Would you stop that? You’re doing that bear thing where you feel like you’re about to go on a killing spree because someone sneezed at what was yours.”

“Because I am! He’s starving her, and she was upset. And I never saw you complaining when I did it for you. I seem to recall you popping a boner,” Cas grumped. “You’re all mine.”

“Yeah. Benji and I are already there. There’s a certain unnamed green witch in the basement who we need to get there. And he’s starving her and upsetting her. Hannibal probably did all kinds of shit to her before we got here. We need to focus on comforting her from afar and the mission. Because if we blow this, we’re all going to lose.”

Cas drew in a breath.

“You’re right. How can I help?”

“Patient files are a bust. Benji has shown me Sam and Dean shit on A03 where they are in a romantic relationship together that is more realistic than this shit and Dean just would not go there. Help me find where they are keeping the angel tears.”

Cas only let Benji call his polar bear Bepo, but Bepo just needed to be redirected. Cas and his bear both wanted to protect their mate. I hated using this metaphor because they were the lying motherfuckers that started this shit, but if you didn’t know the truth about angels, Benji and I were the angel and demon on Cas’s shoulders.

I could cut up, but I’d always advise Cas toward caution because Benji liked his chaos.

Yeah, we could do this. We needed to find out where the ventilator was and then it was just a matter of the lock.
