Chapter 16

Griiq

The acrid stench of brimstone and rotting flesh assaulted my nostrils as I stepped outside the castle walls. Julian, the young deputy, hurried over to me, his face pale and eyes wide with fear.

"Griiq, there are footprints all around the perimeter," he said, his voice trembling. "They're not human. They're...they're like nothing I've ever seen before."

A low growl escaped my throat as I surveyed the area. The Camazotz was here, and it was closing in.

I turned to the Sheriff and his deputies. "We need to move fast. The creature is near."

They nodded grimly, their hands resting on their holstered weapons. I could smell their fear, but also their determination. They knew what we were up against.

I led the way, my heightened senses guiding me through the dense forest surrounding the castle. The footprints were fresh; the stench growing stronger with each step. Behind me, the humans struggled to keep up, their heavy boots crunching on the fallen leaves and twigs.

In the clearing, we came across a parked truck with its engine still running. In the back, secured with thick chains and padlocks, was the silver mirror box - our only hope of trapping the Camazotz.

"We need to transfer it to the ATV," I said, gesturing to the smaller vehicle parked nearby. "It'll be easier to maneuver through the forest."

The deputies quickly got to work, carefully lifting the heavy box and securing it on a trailer hitched to the back of the ATV. I could hear their hearts pounding, their breaths coming in quick gasps as they worked.

As they finished, a piercing shriek echoed through the trees, sending a chill down my spine. The Camazotz was close.

"It's time," I said, my voice low and urgent. "Stay close and stay alert. We're heading into its territory now."

I took the lead, my feet silent on the forest floor as I tracked the creature's scent. The ATV rumbled to life behind me; the humans following close behind with weapons at the ready.

We moved deeper into the forest; the shadows growing longer and the air growing colder. I could feel the Camazotz's presence, its evil energy pulsing through the trees like a sickness.

Suddenly, I glimpsed movement in the underbrush ahead. A pair of glowing red eyes peered out from the darkness, filled with malice and hunger.

"It's here," I whispered, my muscles tensing as I prepared for the fight to come. "Get ready."

The humans raised their weapons, their faces grim with determination. I could hear the clink of the chains as they secured the mirror box on the trailer, ready to spring the trap at a moment's notice.

We inched forward, the tension building with each step. The Camazotz watched us from the shadows, its gaze never wavering. I knew it was toying with us, savoring the fear and anticipation before the confrontation.

It was now or never. The battle for Harlow's safety, for the fate of the community, for my redemption - it all hung in the balance. With a roar of defiance, I charged forward into the darkness, ready to face the Camazotz head-on.

I crept through the undergrowth, my heart pounding in my chest as I followed the Camazotz's scent. The stench of decay and malice hung heavy in the air, a constant reminder of the creature's malevolent presence. I motioned for the others to halt the procession, the low rumble of the ATV's engine fading into silence.

"I need to move ahead alone," I whispered, my voice barely audible over the rustling of leaves. "Wait here until I return."

The humans nodded, their faces grim with determination. I could see the fear in their eyes, but also the trust they placed in me. With a final nod, I turned and melted into the shadows, my footsteps silent on the forest floor.

I pushed deeper into the woods, my senses heightened to their limits. Every snap of a twig, every whisper of the wind, sent a jolt of adrenaline coursing through my veins. The Camazotz was close. I could feel it in my bones.

Suddenly, a familiar scent caught my attention, and my heart nearly stopped. It was Harlow! Her scent was faint, almost lost among the pungent odors of the forest, but there was no mistaking it. She was here, somewhere in this twisted maze of trees and shadows.

I pressed forward, my pace quickening as I followed the scent trail. The forest grew denser, the canopy overhead blocking out the last rays of sunlight. In the distance, I heard a low growl that sent a shiver down my spine. The Camazotz was on the hunt.

I crept closer, my muscles tensed and ready for action. Peering through the foliage, I glimpsed the creature, its massive form looming in the darkness. Its leathery skin glistened with moisture; its eyes glinting with malevolent intelligence.

The Camazotz moved slowly through the undergrowth, its ears twitching and turning like radar dishes. It was searching for something…or someone. My heart pounded in my chest as I realized Harlow must be nearby.

I froze as the creature suddenly turned in my direction, its beady eyes scanning the shadows. Time seemed to stand still as I held my breath; my entire body was rigid with tension. The Camazotz sniffed the air, its nostrils flaring as it caught a scent.

For a moment, I thought it had detected me, but then it turned away, moving off in another direction. I let out a slow breath; my heart was still racing as I watched it disappear into the darkness.

I knew I had to act fast. Harlow was out there somewhere; her life hanging in the balance. I turned and made my way back to where the others were waiting; my mind racing as I formulated a plan.

As I emerged from the trees; Mason and Sheriff Harper looked up expectantly; their faces etched with worry.

"I caught Harlow's scent," I said in a low and urgent voice. "She's out there; somewhere near the Camazotz."

They exchanged glances; fear and determination warring on their faces.

"We need to act fast," Sheriff Harper said; his hand resting on the butt of his pistol. "What's the plan?"

I took a deep breath; my mind racing as I considered our options. The Camazotz was a formidable foe; its strength and cunning, unmatched by any creature I had ever encountered.

"We approach from two sides;" I said. My voice was steady despite the fear churning in my gut. "The ATV will come in from the east; drawing its attention. While it's distracted; we'll flank it from the west and spring the trap."

They nodded, their faces set with resolve. It was a risky plan, but it was our best chance at saving Harlow and ending the Camazotz's reign of terror.

As we made our preparations, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were walking into a battle from which there might be no return. But for Harlow; for the people of this town I would risk everything.

With a final nod to the others, I turned and led the way back into the forest. My senses were alert for any sign of the Camazotz or Harlow. The last confrontation was upon us, and I knew only one side would emerge victorious.

My heart pounded in my chest as we approached the Camazotz's position. The wind was in our favor, blowing our scent away from the creature's keen nose. I motioned for the deputies to move quietly, their weapons at the ready, as they circled around to the other side of the clearing.

The plan was simple, but risky. The deputies, armed with harpoons and high-powered rifles, would push the Camazotz towards the awaiting trap, while I served as the bait to lure it in. It was a gamble, but one we had to take if we wanted to save Harlow and put an end to this nightmare.

As I stepped out into the open, the Camazotz's eyes locked onto me, its massive head swiveling in my direction. I could feel the weight of its gaze, the malevolent intelligence that lurked behind those glowing red orbs. It knew I was here, and it was ready for a fight.

I stood my ground, my muscles tensed and ready for action. The Camazotz shifted its weight, its claws digging into the soft earth as it prepared to charge. But before it could make a move, a muffled scream pierced the air, and my heart nearly stopped.

"Griiq, run! Get away from it!"

It was Harlow's voice, coming from somewhere behind the Camazotz. She sounded desperate, her words choked with fear and desperation. I couldn't see her, but I knew she was there, trapped and helpless in the creature's clutches.

The Camazotz"s head swiveled towards the sound, its eyes narrowing with predatory intent. I knew I had to act fast before it could turn its attention back to me. I took a step back, my hands held out in a gesture of surrender.

"Easy now," I said, my voice low and soothing. "I'm not here to fight. I just want the girl."

The Camazotz growled, its muscles rippling beneath its leathery skin. It took a step forward, its eyes never leaving mine. I could feel the power emanating from its massive frame, the sheer strength and ferocity that made it such a formidable foe.

Behind the creature, I glimpsed movement as the deputies emerged from the trees, their weapons trained on the Camazotz's back. They moved with practiced efficiency, fanning out to surround the beast and cut off its escape.

I took another step back, my heart pounding in my chest as I watched the deputies close in. The Camazotz sensed the trap, its head whipping around as it caught sight of the armed men. It let out a roar of fury, its claws digging into the ground as it prepared to charge.

But before it could make a move, one deputy fired his harpoon, the razor-sharp point embedding itself in the creature's shoulder. The Camazotz howled in pain, its eyes blazing with rage as it turned to face its attacker.

The Camazotz yanked the point from its shoulder and cast it to the ground in a flurry of wing flaps and painful howls. The sound of gunfire filled the air, the high-powered rifles barking as the deputies unloaded on the creature. Immortal Camazotz roared in pain and fury, its hide riddled with bullets and harpoons .It fought on, its strength and ferocity undiminished by its wounds. It was of no use.

I knew we had to get out of there before the creature could turn its attention back to us. Where was Harlow? She was close for I could smell her. My eyes locked on the Camazotz as it thrashed and fought against its attackers.

Behind me, the deputies were shouting orders, their voices tight with fear and determination. They were doing their best to push the Camazotz towards the trap, but the creature was proving to be a formidable opponent.

As I reached the edge of the clearing, I risked a glance over my shoulder, my heart pounding in my chest as I saw the trap looming in the distance. It was now or never. We had to make our move before the Camazotz could escape or turn the tables on us.

With a last glance at the raging battle behind me, I plunged into the trees, my mind racing as I tried to come up with a plan to end this nightmare once and for all. The final confrontation was upon us, and I knew the stakes had never been higher.
