Sadie

When the door swings inward, I am excited to finally get seen but feel annoyed that she didn't even knock. My eyes widen in shock as Donnie comes barreling in, looking hot and sexy with his hat backward, and wearing gray sweats and a black T-shirt with his school's logo.

"Hey." His tone is soft like velvet.

"Hey."

"Did I miss it?"

I shake my head.

His face softens as he comes forward.

"Good." He kisses the top of my head.

There's a knock at the door, and the doctor walks in.

Finally.

"Hi, Sadie. I'm Dr. Puentes" She turns to Donnie. "Are you the father?"

"Yes, that's right," he confirms with pride.

"I'm glad you're here." She turns toward the ultrasound machine and rolls the cart closer to me.

"Go ahead and lay down, Sadie, and pull up your shirt," the doctor instructs me while pulling on green latex gloves.

I lay down and pull my shirt midway to my chest, right below my breasts.

DONOVAN

I lean closer and stretch my arm over her head.

The doctor squirts green gel over Shorty's baby bump and moves the wand around her stomach. The screen is black and fuzzy until it isn't.

"Is that…" I start to say, but the doctor cuts in.

"Yes, this right here—" she points to a bean shape—"is your baby."

A baby. Our baby.

You can see a head and a small body.

Oh, shit!

"It moved!" I say excitedly. The baby gave a slight flicker.

The doctor laughs heartily. "Everything looks great."

My heart lifts. I look down at Shorty; tears fill her eyes, but she gives me a warm smile. I lean down and press my lips against hers, not giving a shit that the doctor is in the room.

"You," I say with a smile, "are amazing." And I kiss her again.
