Chapter 61 Camilla

61 CAMILLA

NOW

Camilla comes to, finding herself on the floor. Her head is throbbing, and when she raises a hand to the part that hurts most, her fingers are met with blood. Her jaw aches, and she reckons it’s dislocated. Her ears ring. She feels nauseous, too, until she recalls what happened, and she starts.

Rob was here, and he had a knife… and Darcy… She confessed to killing Cam, and everyone in the guesthouse, and Antoni.

Quickly, she scrambles to her feet, still unsteady and woozy but afraid that Darcy or Rob will come at her again. Her eyes fall on a shape on the floor close to the kitchen. It’s Rob, and he very much looks like he’s dead.

She looks back across the floor, at the pieces of the sculpture scattered across the tiles. She remembers bringing that down on Rob’s head before he clocked her in the jaw and she cracked her head against the corner of the sideboard. There are long smears of blood on the floor, too. And a phone, lying on the floor by the sideboard where she fell.

It’s Darcy’s phone. Camilla sees that the camera app is still open, a red RECORDING notification flashing on the upper part of the screen. It’s been recording for nine minutes. The visual is just the floor, but the audio will have captured more.

Quickly she presses STOP, then clicks on the recording above. It’s the video from the gym. She deletes it.

Then she straightens, listening hard for a moment. There’s a sound coming from somewhere, a drumming of feet. It stops, and she hears a knock on the door.

She can see the door is already ajar from when Rob burst inside. “Come in,” she calls.

Two resort staff members enter the villa, looking spooked and apologetic at once. It’s Rafi, Kate’s butler, and Nura, the resort manager.

“We received a call from one of the guests,” Rafi says carefully. “They said someone was in distress, that there was screaming.” He looks her over. She’s covered in blood. “I think we need to take you to hospital,” he says.

There’s a noise upstairs, and she glances up to see Kate and Jade standing on the upper landing, both bloodied, as though they’ve just climbed out of a den of lions.

Nura steps forward, noticing Rob’s body on the floor. She mutters something Camilla doesn’t understand, a noise of shock. Quickly, she bends and checks Rob’s pulse, then shakes her head at Rafi. “He’s dead.”

“We’ve locked Darcy in the bathroom upstairs,” Kate says grimly, emerging into the living room. “We were caught in the crossfire, you might say.”

Camilla glances at Kate, then slumps down dramatically into a chair. “Oh, thank God you came!” she tells Nura and Rafi. “We were afraid for our lives!”
