Epilogue
EPILOGUE
BAYLOR
“Are you sure about this?” I asked, straightening my jacket.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” Marcus asked without humor.
“Yeah, I’m kidding you,” I joked, my face breaking out in a grin. “Your tie’s crooked.” I reached out to straighten it, and Marcus smiled at me.
“This could be you next time, with me standing up as your best man.”
“Maybe your tie is straight, but your head is on crooked.”
Marcus laughed. “Whoever thought you’d fall for your biggest nemesis?”
“Don’t get me wrong, there are times I still can’t fucking stand him, but he’s grown on me, like… like… mold.”
“I’m sure he feels the same way about you.” Marcus laughed. “Do you think Austin’s gonna be surprised? ”
“Please, didn’t you say Wilder was bringing him? There’s no way that kid didn’t spill the beans. He couldn’t keep a secret if his life depended on it. In fact, we better get out there. Your groom should be arriving in just under ten minutes.”
“This place is sick, right?” Marcus asked as we cleared the locker room and walked down the corridor that led to the field. What was once Safeco Field was now T-Mobile Park . The field of green stretched out before us, partially covered by the retractable roof. My heart beat a little faster, a little harder, just being able to stand in the middle of it all. I grew up watching games played here on TV and dreamed of sitting in the stands someday—and I had, several times—but this was the first time I’d ever stepped foot on the grass and dirt.
“Sick,” I agreed. “What did this cost you?”
“Don’t ask.” He groaned like he was in pain. “Doesn’t matter, anyway. Marrying Austin is worth any cost.”
“You lucked out for sure.”
We walked across the field to where the small wedding party was gathered. Marcus took his place on the pitcher’s mound, where Austin would join him. I stood beside him, and my eyes fell on Casey, looking ridiculously hot in a navy-blue suit that fit his muscular body to perfection.
“Not looking so bad there, Coach.” My eyes ate him up.
“Neither are you, Blue.”
“The locker rooms are empty. If you want to check them out with me,” I offered, smiling wickedly .
“After the ceremony,” he promised.
I barely heard the vows Marcus and Austin exchanged. My mind was already on Casey and me, sealed in a steamy embrace in the locker room. Maybe I was on my knees for him or pushed against the wall. He could have me any way he wanted me. You’d never hear me complain.
“The rings, Baylor,” Marcus repeated, coughing to get my attention.
“Oh, sorry.” Casey chuckled, and I thought he might have realized my thoughts were on him instead of the wedding. Marcus just shook his head and grabbed the rings.
It was a beautiful ceremony… once I started paying attention. Austin approached his groom to his walkout song, and his parents were there along with Marcus’s. The sexy fantasy of the locker room switched to one like this, standing side-by-side with Casey on a ball field as we exchanged vows someday. Maybe Rawlings would hold our rings. She would look adorable, with a bow around her neck instead of a collar.
God, one wedding, and I was turning into a fucking sap.
There was a buffet laid out behind home plate, and dancing on the infield under the stars. I was glad I didn’t have to hide anymore, and that I could dance with Casey out in the open.
His arms were wound around my back and waist, mine around his neck. “All of our best memories are at ball fields, aren’t they?” he mused.
“The night you fucked me on my knees in the grass?”
He laughed. “I was thinking of the day we met for the second time, and I realized who you were.”
“This night doesn’t suck either,” I added, pressing my cheek to his.
The sky had turned dark, and the stars were out in full force. I sighed, feeling all the tension leave my body as I melted into him. “I dreamed of this, you know. Wished for it.”
“What are you talking about?” he asked, pulling back to look into my eyes.
“That night at the ball field when you fucked me? We wished on that shooting star, don’t you remember? You asked me what I wished for, and I said it wouldn’t come true if I told you. This is what I wished for.”
“Dancing under the stars with me?” A smile teased his lips.
“Sort of.” My lips touched his, and he opened for me, welcoming my tongue into his mouth. When the kiss ended, I breathed against his lips, my forehead resting against his. “Kissing you out in the open under the stars, being in your arms. Belonging to you.”
Casey held me tighter. “I wished for this, too. I guess wishes really do come true.”
“Does that mean the one I had earlier about me and you in the locker room will come true?”
“Oh, you can count on it,” he promised. “Go figure,” he smirked, nipping at my nose. “The guy known for making terrible calls turned out to be the best call of my life. ”
“Go figure.” I grinned, tasting victory at last.
