80. Alice

ALICE

W e follow the photographer’s directions as she has us stand in various locations and poses on the set.

It’s surreal to be back on the Second Bite set. Or rather, the traveling version, not the actual set out in California.

When I first walked out between the workstations back in Minnesota, I knew it would be a life-changing experience. I knew I’d never be the same.

And now…

Now I’m back on set.

In Canada.

With Michael.

As a freaking judge!

“Finally.” The camerawoman huffs.

Wondering what we’re doing wrong, I jerk my gaze over to the photographer, but she’s talking to Joey, who’s striding across the room toward us.

“Come over here.” She points at me and Michael.

Joey continues to saunter, unbothered by her tone.

He’s been the host of Second Bite for years, so he’s probably used to the bossiness of some of the crew.

He’s not as popular as Michael, but he’s good looking and outgoing, as TV hosts usually are.

“Hey, Alice. How nice to see you again.” His smile tells me he’s seen the photos, and I feel myself blushing again.

I really need to just accept that every human on Earth has probably seen the photos and deal with it.

“Mike.” Joey tips his head at Michael.

Michael grunts in reply.

“Joey.” The photographer snaps her fingers. “Stand between these two.”

I start to step away from Michael to make room, but a hand clamps down on my shoulder.

“No.” Michael’s gruff tone leaves no room for argument.

The photographer sighs but doesn’t complain, just directs Joey to stand a few inches to my right.

Michael stays plastered to my left side, his arm still draped across my shoulders, and I can totally picture him stretching his hand out, shoving Joey away if he gets too close.

Placing my hand in the middle of Michael’s back, I look up at him.

As expected, his face is set in a scowl, and I bite my lip in an attempt to keep my smile under control.

There’s a flash.

“Perfect. Hold that.”

Me?

I look over at the photographer.

“Alice. Stop moving.” She bites the words out.

My mouth pops open, embarrassment flooding my cheeks.

There’s another flash.

Joey chuckles at my side, and I turn my head to look at him.

Apparently not liking that, Michael tightens his hold on me, forcing my body to aim toward his even as I look over my shoulder at Joey.

Another fucking flash.

The cousins won’t stop sending me audio clips of themselves laughing.

For some reason, I thought the promo photos would take longer to be posted. As in, maybe tomorrow morning before the first episode. I was not expecting them to go viral an hour after we finished shooting them.

The pictures are pretty entertaining. And even though I’m the one who looks ridiculous, I can see why they used them.

There are a few of just Michael and me, but the three photos of us with Joey are popping up everywhere.

Me gazing at Michael, every bit of my love for him obvious in my expression.

Me with my mouth and eyes wide open, looking guilty as hell pressed into Michael’s side.

And me hugged against Michael’s body, looking over my shoulder at Joey, who’s smirking at both of us.

I didn’t look at the online comments.

I’m not interested in hurting my own feelings.

But my cousins sent me screenshots of the best ones.

Anyone else still just thinking about that hot tub picture?

Fuck me, I hope they have babies immediately.

Would pay so much money to see Chef Mike punch Joey in the face for looking too closely at his girl.

We all pretending we wouldn’t prefer an episode of Naked Bite?

Back in pajamas, I drop onto the bed.

After the photo shoot, we came up to our room, and I carefully removed my clothes, making sure to smooth out any wrinkles as I hung them up.

Michael said he had to run out to take care of something, probably tabloid related, so I put on my pajamas and ordered room service.

Tomorrow is the first day of filming, and as much as I want to be at Michael’s side, I don’t know anything that would help out in the investigation.

I shimmy under the covers.

I don’t want to go to sleep without Michael, so I’ll wait up for him. But I can just rest my eyes.
