CHAPTER TWENTY

Five years ago

Hey you …

She waits. This is the third time she’s sent out a feeler this week. No scrolling ellipsis. Nothing. She’s been away from him for two months now, and while communication has become gradually more patchy as his new job has got more and more demanding, he’s never not answered before.

Has something horrible happened?

Again.

Or is it much more predictable than that? Is he ghosting her? Has he found someone else?

She doesn’t know.

All she knows is that it feels as if he’s turning into a different person.
