Chapter Twenty-Seven Faith

"Best get her out quick."

The voice came from far away. Faith was drifting, the earth below her shifting like it never had before. A pair of arms held her, but she didn't know who they belonged to.

"Could I…?" she tried. Could they even hear her? "I want to…"

"Hammond says there might still be Resistance in the crowds," the voice continued, as though she hadn't spoken. "This girl's important to Danforth. We have to keep her safe."

Faith forced her eyes open. The arms which surrounded her belonged to an older woman in a guard uniform. She was being carried.

"Where are you t–" she tried, but her voice didn't seem to be working. The woman didn't even glance down.

Faith's eyelids felt heavy, but she blinked, trying to focus. They were moving down a corridor, people hurrying past in both directions. Twisting her body, she tried to read a sign on the wall as they passed.

"Keep still." The guard tightened her hold. "If you keep wriggling like that, I'll drop you."

Faith sucked in a deep breath. Her chest hurt. As the guard strode onwards, she tried to resist. But her body would not obey.

"Better stay here until I confirm there's a vehicle waiting." A gruff voice commanded. "Don't want you to get her out on the streets with no waiting transport."

"I'll wait then." The woman hitched Faith up, as though she were getting heavy. "But don't be long. We've no idea what impact the drug she took will have. Let's get her to a medic as soon as possible."

Faith closed her eyes. She had to stay focused. Try…try to escape.

But the woman's arms were like a vice. And she was so very tired.

"What‘s happening with the other two?" The woman carrying her asked a passing guard.

"They're dead. Not a priority."

Faith's head swam. Flynn and Robyn were gone. All her efforts to save Noah's father had been for nothing. She hadn't even been able to share Sophia's dying message. And now she had fallen back into Danforth's clutches.

An overwhelming sense of helplessness took hold of Faith when the ambulance arrived. An ambulance meant she was headed to the hospital. Going to the hospital meant she'd be replacing Sophia in the fertility experiment.

As the woman carried her away, Faith stopped fighting.
