Chapter 27

CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

C ouncilor Faro’s Residence on Cappra, Two Weeks Later

Ashlyn leapt and spun in perfect harmony to the Earth music blaring through the communication panel in her new makeshift dance studio. Zade had been gone for almost two weeks and she was going crazy with worry. Dancing was the only thing she’d found that could take her mind off her troubles. Amazingly, now that she didn’t have to dance, she was rediscovering her joy in it. She had no desire to go back to performing professionally, but this felt good. Better than good.

A flicker of movement from the door drew her attention. “Zade!”

She ran, full speed, into his arms, raining kisses all over his face. He swung her around, laughing.

“I am pleased to see you missed me, mate.”

“Oh my god, I’ve been so worried.”

“No more than I.” He gave her a long, soul-searing kiss.

Ashlyn was the first to break away. There was nothing she wanted to do more than hug and kiss and get intimately reacquainted with her mate, but there were things they needed to discuss.

“Come on.” She grabbed her dance bag, shoved everything inside, and headed to their suite, Zade at her side.

Once in the safety of their huge, freshly decorated suite, she dropped the bag and waved her hand over a scanner in the wall. When a red light flashed, she said, “Activate sound disruptors. All rooms.”

Zade frowned, but remained quiet and followed her into their sleeping chambers.

Ashlyn breathed a sigh of relief as soon as they were in their bedroom and the door was closed.

“What happened while I was gone?”

“We’ve already caught two spies in the house. The guards you left here have been amazing.”

“Good. I will have them reassigned here until your Cappran security detail has been vetted by Bren. Has anyone become suspicious about C’Nar?”

“I don’t think so. I made a point of stomping around as that asshole at least once a day for the first week. Yesterday I, or rather C’Nar, made a big stink about leaving Cappra for a few weeks. I don’t think anyone suspects he’s dead. How did things go on your end? I wish we could have used the comms to talk.”

He grinned. “Too risky. It was not easy making Caldor’s security measures for Earth appear to be weakening when in fact we have been fortifying them. King Dagan has a base full of talented warriors, and he has made them aware of the danger Earth is in.”

“Have you two figured out how C’Nar was getting human women for Mr. ‘D’?”

Zade’s lips twitched. His mate was adorable. “Mr. ‘D’?”

She flushed. “Well, I have to call him something. ‘The potentially dead, creepy vampire guy with evil eyes and sharp fangs’ is too long, don’t you think?”

“Definitely too long. Dagan promised me that as soon as he has some answers, he’ll let us know.”

“And what about Commander Bashall? Have they found him yet?”

Zade sighed and rested his forehead against hers. “No, shenga. They won’t stop looking until he has been found, though. I’m told his twin brother has a special connection to him, and he has been searching, as well. How was your Council meeting?”

Ashlyn wrapped her arms around Zade’s waist and rested her head on his chest. “Everyone was in a panic about the Dark Ones and had a different opinion about what we should do. And, of course, they’re in a panic because three of the Council members, really important ones, are dead, and no one knows who will be sent to replace them. They want answers.”

“That is to be expected. What about you? What do you want, Councilor Faro?”

She looked into his eyes. They were full of love. Heat. Desire. They’d spent the past two weeks apart, trying to solve every problem, keep everyone safe. Intergalactic intrigue was just going to have to wait until morning. “Well, right now I want you to make me beg, but I don’t think you can.”

Laughing, he crowded her until she’d backed into the wall. “I can,” he growled, “and I will.”

And he did.
