Chapter Twenty-Five
Chapter Twenty-Five
Falcon & Makayla ~ Baby Talk!
Makayla drifted in a pleasant haze. Thinking about being pregnant. When she first realized that having a baby with Falcon was a possibility, she had wanted to wait. To give them some time to settle in as a couple before adding a child to the mix. She didn't want to have a child this soon.
She frowned, thinking. They had a discussion. Kayla knew that someday it would happen, but she had asked Falcon to use birth control. She distinctly remembered the conversation.
Out of the blue, Falcon said, "And when we have children, we will make the changes you are comfortable with." He'd been talking about their living arrangements. Letting her know he'd move wherever she wanted to be.
She pulled her hand back, angry. "Don't make fun of me, Falcon."
He forced her to give him back her hand and then smugly informed her, "I don't make fun of you, my Keeper. I know the damn Siloth assumed you were past childbearing years. But in your current form, it is possible to have my children for another couple hundred years."
She stared at him with a blank look, then pointed at him. "If that is true, I want to know why and how. AND you won't touch me again until we have some form of birth control. I would like to have a baby sometime, but not right now."
Before Falcon could comment, her stomach growled. Loudly.
Then Falcon fed her all her favorite foods, and they shelved the discussion about birth control.
When they picked it up again, she had asked, "Have you figured out what we can use for birth control? Because I brought a lot of stuff from home, but that wasn't something I thought I'd ever need again."
Falcon nodded hopefully. "We don't need birth control. You won't be able to get pregnant until several months after your conversion. Once that happens, I can control when my body releases active sperm."
She narrowed her eyes at him. Wondering… "Does that control ever fail?"
He shook his head. "No. It is absolute."
Snorting, she mumbled without even opening her eyes, " Absolute, my ass ."
"What love?" He rolled over and sat with his back against the headboard. Then reached down and pulled her into his arms, so she half sprawled across his front.
"You told me you had absolute control over your sperm. This..." She raked her hand down her body to hover over her belly, "Means you lost control somewhere along the line."
He sighed. "I may have misjudged the timing on when your conversion would be complete."
Kayla choked. "Misjudged? I can't believe… Never mind. It is done. For now. Because after this baby is born, I'm going to be in charge of the birth control." She wasn't mad. She should have known better. She took a deep breath and thought about it. She liked the idea of being pregnant at the same time as her sister. They could commiserate and help each other through it. And raise their children together. So she'd let it go. This time.
She drifted a bit, laying on Falcon. Thoughts moving in and out of her brain. Until one caught her attention. She sat up a bit to see his face when she asked him, "Is there anything about my being a Guardian's Keeper that could cause problems or make a difference to my pregnancy?"
A look passed over his face that she didn't like. She sat up straighter. Now she was worried. "Why do you have that look on your face? What is the problem?"
Falcon sucked in a breath and then said, "If we were on my home planet, you would be pregnant for 38 months. But since we live on Megoth, both of our biological clocks are set to the ruling class on this planet. It is one of the Guardian rules. Conception and pregnancy mirror the dominant life form."
Makayla blinked. Several times. Then slowly said, "The ruling class is made up of dragons."
Falcon nodded, no expression on his face. "Yes," he said simply.
This wasn't a simple issue. "Falcon?"
"Yes, my love."
She wanted to smack him for making her ask. She ground her teeth together. "How long do dragon pregnancies last?"
He sighed. "Eighty-six weeks."
She blinked. Not once, but twice. Then did the math in her head. She sputtered. "That is twenty-one and a half Earth months."
He grimaced. "Technically, it is just over twenty-three months on this planet."
She glared at him. Then had another thought. "Is there anything else about dragon pregnancies I should know?"
He shifted under her gaze and, with his voice barely above a whisper, asked, "Are multiple births common on Earth?"
She bit her lip before answering. "They happen. But I would say rarely." Then sighed. "How common are they for the dragons?"
"A single pup in a litter is rare."
Makayla went silent. And then started laughing. "Oh god. This is unbelievable. Well, at least Kaitlyn's pregnancy will be normal."
"Ummm," Falcon's noise cut stopped abruptly at her look.
She glared and growled her question. "You better tell me what that noise meant. What is it?"
Falcon had pressed his lips together. He shook his head and after another threatening look, finally offered, "The Megoth horde has a gestational period of twenty-six months" The rest came out in a rush, "And the average weight of a male child is nineteen pounds."
Makayla blinked and then hissed, " I am going to kill Viktal. "
