Chapter Twenty-Two
Chapter Twenty-Two
Kaitlyn & Makayla ~ Are you sick?
Kaitlyn ended the call with Tallie, satisfied that her friend was safe behind a locked door on the bridge of the ship. She'd be here in two days.
She went to find Makayla and didn't have far to go. They were all sitting right outside the spaceship in front of a roaring fire. Kait grinned. You could take the ranch girl as far away from Texas as possible, but you couldn't take Texas out of the girl. Sitting in front of the firepit was something they did for fun, for comfort, and just because.
As she neared the fire, Viktal opened his arms for her. She grinned and settled on his lap. No one said anything for a moment. They all seemed transfixed by the fire. Kait thought about Tallie and her problems. It was a bit of a mess, but she felt like her friend was safe for now and there wasn't anything Kait could do to help until the ship landed on Megoth.
Eventually, Viktal broke the silence. "Makayla, did you have time to finish the medical tests?"
Kait started. She'd forgotten what they were doing when her friend called. Now she remembered her sister's shocked exclamation, and she turned toward Kayla to see her intently focused on the fire. Climbing off Viktal's lap, she put her hand up in a stopping motion. She wanted to make sure the men didn't talk. She moved toward her sister and knelt at her feet. Reaching over, she took Kayla's hands into her own and squeezed. "What is it, sis? What is wrong?" she kept her voice low and soft.
Makayla looked up, and met Kaitlyn's gaze, then leaned in and rested her forehead on her sister's. She dropped her voice and whispered so only Kait could hear. "Nothing is wrong. We are both pregnant." Then she drew back and looked into Kait's eyes again.
Kait was so shocked, she dropped Kayla's hands and tumbled back onto her ass. Landing sprawled in the dirt. Within seconds, she burst into tears. Kayla eased down beside her and held her sister in her arms. They remained sprawled on the ground, their arms locked together while they sobbed.
It wasn't long before Viktal was there, lifting his mate in his arms. "What is it? Is she sick? What can we do? Where do we need to go?" His voice rose with every question.
The rush of panic in her mate made Kaitlyn turn toward him and place her hand lightly over his mouth. She couldn't speak yet, but she shook her head no. "I'm okay," she finally managed to whisper. "Better than okay." And she started bawling again. But these were definitely happy tears.
She buried her head in Viktal's chest and held on for dear life. Being pregnant explained the tears. These, as well as all those she'd cried in the last few days. It also explained her nausea, and probably a few other things that she wrote off to being tired and stressed. Her lack of energy and the need for more sleep... could also be blamed on the baby.
She was having a baby. Kaitlyn glanced over to see Falcon holding Makayla. Both sisters were having a baby.
Falcon was asking her sister the same questions Viktal kept murmuring in her ear. Makayla kept shaking her head. Then she looked at Kaitlyn and grinned. Kait noticed when Kayla held up three fingers. She dropped one and winked.
Kait nodded and watched Makayla drop the second. When the third finger dropped, the women said together... "We're pregnant!"
And then they both leaned back and waited for their news to sink in.
