Chapter 19
As the clock struck midnight, the air itself seemed to still, a hushed anticipation falling over Whispering Pines. Ellie stood at her window, her heart pounding in time with the distant chime of the clock tower. The moon hung full and heavy in the sky, casting an eerie silver glow over the landscape.
From the forest, dark figures emerged from the shadows, their robes billowing in the breeze. They moved with a singular purpose, their steps in unison as they marched toward Ellie's home. As they drew closer, their chants rose, a discordant chorus that sent shivers down Ellie's spine.
Then she saw it for the first time. Jasper had said the Therens were known for their connection to nature and the afterlife. She wasn't sure what the foggy mass surrounding the cult members was, but she'd bet some rogue spirit or demon had attached itself to the humans, giving them magical abilities regular humans didn't have. How else could these people do what they've been doing with dark magic?
As she watched the group advance, the fog rose several feet above the individuals, broke into pieces, then each section dove toward a person and sank into their bodies.
With a gasp, she realized the cult was now possessed by the entity. They raised their hands and dark power came from them.
The wards around her house shuddered under the onslaught, the protective enchantments flickering like a candle in a tempest. Ellie gritted her teeth, forcing more of her power into the defenses. The artifacts around her glowed brighter, pumping with energy as they amplified her magic.
But still, the cultists advanced, their chanting growing louder, more frenzied. The dark magic crashed against Ellie's magic like a tidal wave, relentless and unyielding.
For a moment, Ellie felt a flicker of fear, a whisper of doubt. They were so many, their power so vast. How could she stand against such darkness?
But then, she felt it. A warmth at her side, a presence as familiar as her own heartbeat. Reed, her love, her partner in all things. He stood beside her, his amber eyes glowing with an inner fire.
And beyond him in the living room, two more figures, their power shining like beacons in the night. Celeste and Luna, her sisters in magic, her mentors and friends.
Celeste's auburn hair whipped in the wind, her emerald eyes fierce with purpose. Her hands were raised, green sparks dancing at her fingertips, the very essence of the earth rising to her call.
Luna stood serene, her silver-streaked hair a halo in the moonlight. Her violet eyes were closed, her lips moving in a silent incantation. Around her, the air shimmered.
"We end this as a team." Reed's voice was a low growl.
Ellie nodded, tears of gratitude and love pricking at her eyes. She reached out, her hand finding Reed's, their fingers intertwining. At the contact, she felt a surge of power, a melding of their strengths. His shifter might, her witch magic, woven together into a force beyond reckoning.
Celeste and Luna moved to flank them, their magic joining with Ellie's, a trinity of power that made the very earth tremble.
With a deep breath, they stepped forward as one, out of the house and onto the front lawn, facing the horde of cultists head-on.
The dark figures laughed with voices that a human could not make. "Foolish witches," one of them hissed, his voice slithering through the air. "You cannot stop us. The dark one will rise, and this town will fall."
Celeste's eyes narrowed, a smirk playing at her lips. "Oh, honey, you've picked the wrong town to mess with."
Her hands slammed into the ground, and the earth erupted, great vines bursting forth, writhing like serpents as they ensnared the cultists, dragging them down.
Luna's eyes snapped open, glowing with an otherworldly light. The air around her sparked, and spectral forms took shape, the spirits of witches long passed, summoned to aid in this final battle.
Ellie felt their power, ancient and vast, flowing into her. With a cry that echoed through the night, she unleashed it. It burst from her in a blinding wave of light, pure and radiant, engulfing the cultists. They screamed, the sound high and terrible as the light seared them, burning away the darkness that cloaked them.
Reed leaped forward, his body shifting midair. Where a man had stood, now a great tiger landed, claws extended, fangs bared. He tore into the cultists, a whirlwind of fur and fury. His enhanced senses guiding him, warning him of the dark spells they hurled. Around him, the deputies fought with equal ferocity, their weapons and courage a beacon in the night.
But the cultists were relentless, their dark magic seemingly endless, pressing forward with a single-minded determination.
The battle raged, magic and might clashing in a spectacular display of power. Ellie felt the energy coursing through her, the ley lines of Whispering Pines surging up to aid her. The very earth seemed to fight with them, roots bursting from the ground to ensnare the cultists, the wind whipping into a frenzy, driving them back.
But the dark magic was strong, and the cultists fought with the desperation of fanatics. For every one that fell, two more seemed to take their place, an endless tide of shadow.
Just as despair began to claw at Ellie's heart, a new sound rang out over the battlefield. A chorus of howls, deep and resonant, echoing from the edge of the forest. Shapes burst from the tree line – wolves with pelts of silver and black, eyes glowing with fierce intelligence.
At their head was a wolf larger than the rest, his fur a rich, midnight black. He threw back his head and let out a howl that seemed to shake the very foundations of the earth.
"Kade," Reed gasped, shifting back to his human form. "The wolf shifters have come."
He was grateful for their help, but would the powerful magic being slung around kill them? Ellie wasn't strong enough to shield them all. Something had to give.
