27. DANNY
In the darkness of my apartment, I sat in front of my laptop. Was I really going to do this? The glow of the screen cast flickering shadows across the room. I stared at the email I was typing. Am I really going to do this?
Of all the things I had thought about in the last weeks, there was only one truth that resonated clearly: I was in love with Bruno. There it was, clear and simple. I was in love with him. It was a revelation that cut through any haze of confusion and dilemma. I think I had known it all along, but the moment I truly knew it was when I was looking at Tinder, and all I wanted to do was be with him.
Anyhow, I knew what I had to do. In the stillness of my lonely, large apartment, I made a choice. I was typing, not in a text message but in an email that was going to change the course of everything and take me to a precipice from which I might not be able to return. I might not even want to…
But I didn't send it quite yet. With a sense that I had to be doubly sure, I grabbed my phone and opened the Kayak app. I put in the destination and the date, which was not exactly far away.
With each tap, the screen illuminated my options, routes, times, classes, one-way or return. As I keyed in the details, my anticipation mounted. I selected a flight for the morning. The screen came up asking me to check the details and then the price. It was a lot, but I didn't care. I just didn't care.
With my ticket booked, I felt set to embark on my journey. That was only the first step, and it was time for the second. I returned to my email, wrote it out, reread it, and then proofread it, just to be sure.
Subject: Resignation Letter
Dear Mr. Reynolds,
I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to inform you of my decision to resign from my position, effective immediately.
First and foremost, I want to express my deepest gratitude for the opportunities and support that you and the team have provided me during my time here. It has been an incredible journey, and I am truly grateful for the chance to contribute to such a dynamic and inspiring workplace.
However, after much reflection and consideration, I have come to the difficult decision to pursue a new chapter in my life. Unfortunately, you felt unable to offer me a position in New York, so now I have to pursue my options outside the company. This decision is driven by personal reasons that require my immediate attention and commitment.
I wish the team continued success and prosperity in all future endeavors. Please extend my best wishes to everyone, and again, I want to thank you personally for everything. I have learned so much from you.
Best regards,
Danny
Despite the hugeness of my action, I didn't have a single doubt. I pressed Send, and then I closed my laptop, and for the first time in weeks, I slept so soundly from the moment my head hit the pillow to the moment I awoke the next day.
