Epilogue Berus
Berus stepped out of the robotic warrior with a grin so wide that it almost hurt his face. The suits weren't in working condition yet, but just sitting inside one and pretending he could control it made him feel like a young male again. Except this time, he didn't need to worry about where his next meal would be coming from, and he didn't feel so alone anymore.
Cami skipped up to meet him. "You look fantastic in it. I can't believe the Dominion actually tried to make mech suits—no, wait. I take that back. It's totally the kind of technology an evil authoritarian government would invest in."
Gavin and Kirek were going to be very busy for the next little while as they worked on getting the suits into prime condition again. Berus had never seen the two so excited.
After making sure that the bounty hunters had left the region completely, the Revenge had gone back to the mining planet to drop off Nibbles and pick up the journal Roxy had left behind the first time around. But Nibbles had other ideas.
He was quite upset they'd tried to leave him behind, having decided that a pampered life on a ship was better than competing with hundreds of his siblings to survive until adulthood, and now clung to Roxy and Ckzarr as if his life depended on it. According to the information they found on his species, very few made it to adulthood in the wild. Nibbles was smart.
They'd then visited the last known location of the old, abandoned Dominion warship. They were able to tow the entire thing behind them, robotic warriors and all, to Kean's stronghold which was their home base in the outlaw planet of Vosthea. They'd even found a buyer for the antique ship.
Cami looped her arm through his. "You've come, you've seen, and you've conquered. Now, let's get back to our suite so you can come again." She meant the place they stayed when here at the compound. "We haven't christened the whole place yet."
That had Berus quickening his steps. He was highly in favor of this human tradition of fucking on every piece of furniture in every room.
They were just walking out into the sprawling internal garden courtyard that spanned Kean's stronghold when Berus's comm went off. He looked at the screen and frowned. It was Vasek. Strange. Usually his clients called him, not the other way around.
A frazzled-looking Vasek appeared on his screen. That was also peculiar. The medic was usually freakishly calm. There could be thugs knocking down his door and a male bleeding out on his table, and he'd still be the picture of composure.
"My friend. How can I help you?" Berus asked.
"I'd like to call in a favor."
"Of course. I'd never deny a male who's saved my life. What do you need?"
"I require an immediate evac. I'm in the Vosthean jungles, and I need to get to Kean's stronghold. There are enemies after us."
"You are not alone?"
Vasek hesitated. "N-no. That's why I called you and not someone else. I assume you still have a human female, so you will not covet this one."
Cami gasped. "You have a human woman?"
"Yes. No." Vasek looked even more flustered. "It's…a long story."
Interesting . Maybe this was the female who would change the medic's mind and finally get him to settle down.
"I know the jungles are dangerous, but can you please bring Cami? This one is wary and doesn't trust me. I think a friendly face will help her relax."
Berus wasn't sure about bringing his mate on a mission like this. Vosthea made New Rhea look like a playground for youngsters. And Vasek had just admitted that he was being tailed by hostile enemies.
But Cami was nodding wildly and giving him a big thumbs up.
Fuck it. If his little mate wanted to go, then who was he to say no? He'd just have to work extra hard to keep her safe.
"I will bring her. Send me your location, and we'll be on our way."
He hung up, and his comm chimed with the information. "I'm sorry, little one. Our goal to christen every piece of furniture by fucking on it will need to wait."
"We've got plenty of time for that. I want to meet this woman who has Vasek so flustered. I take it he's not usually like this."
"No, he's not at all. He wouldn't survive if he wasn't calm and collected at all times."
"Then I guess it's off to the wilderness again."
"You are not worried, after what happened on New Rhea? Vosthea is much more dangerous."
His mate gazed up at him with trusting, adoring eyes. "With you around? Never. I know you can take care of me. And I couldn't possibly let you go alone! We're partners."
Berus couldn't help cracking a massive grin, because here by his side was the most important person in the entire universe. In Cami, he hadn't just found a partner and mate; he'd found home.
"Then it is decided, my brave little mate. Let's go rescue us a medic!"
