Rule #10: Offers Don't Last Forever
Daniel
M y keys jingled as they hit the sideboard in the entryway of my apartment. Despite the run in with Axel (what a dumb name by the way), I couldn't help but smile to myself. Zoe had stood up for me and whether she wanted to admit it or not, we weren't not friends. But it seemed that she had retreated again. And I wouldn't lie and say it didn't frustrate me. But I had a feeling this would be worth it. She would be worth it. I recognised what she was doing, protecting herself but she didn't need to do that with me. I wished I could make her see that.
Grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge, I couldn't stop thinking about her big caramel brown eyes. So fierce for someone so little. But she was closed off. I could tell by the way her body reacted to me that she was into this. How she melted into my touch when I'd pulled her back from the edge of the boat, but she refused to give in. I loved the challenge. Someone who kept me on my toes and wasn't a pampered princess .
Suddenly, the hairs on the back of my neck prickled and a low growl escaped me. If I hadn't been so preoccupied with thoughts of Zoe, I would have picked up on that scent the minute I stepped foot in here.
"What are you doing here, Benjamin?"
"Our offer still stands, Dan," came a voice from a shadowy corner before the Alpha of the Silvertooth pack stepped out. I was tall, but Benjamin was built like a fucking brick house. Salt peppered his black hair and the leather jacket he wore had the pack symbol on it.
"Daniel," I corrected him. "And my answer remains the same. No, thank you."
"An omega wolf won't survive on his own for very long."
I could hear the threat underlying that statement. But I hadn't left my own pack in London just to join a new one across the Atlantic.
"I've been doing fine on my own so far, mate."
How did he get in here? I'd ask but I'd rather not have him know that he'd caught me off guard.
"Selena would be the perfect match for you, you know. You would be the Alpha one day," he said.
"Knock next time," was all I said, nodding toward the door, dismissing him. I wanted nothing to do with his daughter or his damn pack. The idea of being married to her turned my stomach.
Wrapping two knuckles on my dining table, he scoffed then nodded as he made his way toward my front door.
"The offer won't stand forever, Daniel."
"Noted," I said, turning my back to him as I looked out the window. Turning your back to an Alpha was the biggest fuck you I could give him. But he wasn't my Alpha.
Once he was gone, my shoulders sagged and I let out the breath I had been holding. Running my fingers through my hair, I took a moment to recalibrate. Lone wolves weren't tolerated. They were unpredictable and generally picked on by stronger packs. But being the son of an Alpha, the beta prime and heir apparent, seemingly gave me some grace. And it seemed like that grace was running out. What I needed to do was blow off steam. And I knew just how to do that.
By getting completely and utterly hammered.
